I have been doing a research on how "Windows Search Index Examiner" by passware works.
Does anyone have any idea where does MS windows index all the search done by a user, more specifically interested in the file name where these indexes are stored.
windows.edb is the name of the file used by Windows Desktop Search. If you do a file search, this is stored in the Registry.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply. I am now curious to know where exactly is the file stored in the registry? and
how do I read this file?
windows.edb is a file and thus NOT stored in the Registry. The Registry is a collection of files, it does not store files.
The default location for windows.edb is C\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Search\Data\Applications\Windows\Windows.edb
From the first post, the information on reading the file can be found here http//
Thanks for the reply.
Unfortunately under Microsoft folder i cant see any folder titled search?
what could be the reason for it?

search is a function of Windows.
Jimmy,
I've just seen your post which is quite old now. I'm study the Windows Desktop Search for my project year of my MSc.
If you ping me a pm with your contact details on I'll see if I can assist you.
