Hi
Hope someone out there can help. I've spent about 2 days trying to build a WinFE Win7 ISO with varying degrees of success.
Apart from having to faff around with pre-requisite files from a couple of different WAIKs, working out how PStart works, and finally finding the actual magic WinFE script, plus learning that things didn't work so well if I copied my WIn7 DVD contents to the same drive as WinBuilder, and taking the read-only attribute off the script file - all of which provided an interesting learning experience - I'm now stuck.
Under TweaksWinFE if I try to use my existing FTK installation then WinBuilder creates an icon in the final ISO (on Desktop and in StartForensics) but doesn't actually install it. If I point WinBuilder to the folder where I have FTK installed, same happens. WinBuilder seems to expect FTKI 3.0.0.1443, I have 3.0.1.1467. Is WInBuilder that version-specific?
If I uncheck the boxes to use my existing FTK installation, and try to use FTK Imager Lite under PStart, everything seems to go well until I try to launch FTKI Lite from the CD I created form the ISO. Under PStart nothing happens (or at least I can't SEE anything happening), if I navigate to the folder where FTKI Lite is (it is present on the ISO/CD) and try to launch it by 2x clicking then I get an error message
“YPrograms\FTK Imager Lite\FTK Imager.exe
The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log or use the command-line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail”
Other apps I've installed under PStart include RegRipper, EDD, DCode - and they all work fine.
My version of FTKI Lite is 2.9.0.1385 - anyone got any clues for me? Or do I need to provide more info. I've had a look at the WinBuilder forum already.
Cheers
I had the same problem but found that FTK did install but you have to rummage around on the WINFE build folder structure to find it (the desktop shortcut doesn't point to the right place). I finally got the build correct by moving the FTK folder and files up one level in the WINFE prebuild folders prior to committing to build (contrary to where WINFE puts them originally).

Hi shep47
Yes I've noticed that there seems to be an extra \FTK Imager\ folder in the workbench.
I still can't figure out why FTKI Lite doesn't work from PStart tho, I'd be happy enough if that worked.
I also found that turning off all A/V, Firewall etc helped enormously in completing builds. Unfortunately can't progress this much in the office as GPOs stop me turning off A/V etc and every attempt at a build results in a 145 file copy error.
So have to wait until I get onto the home PC tonight
Cheers

Does the event log reveal anything of use? It might be worth posting the output here for others to check over.
I've had this error before on unrelated applications. If I remember correctly, it was caused by a missing DLL file, that was present, but not in the expected location. I think the application wanted it to be in the same folder as the executable, not the system32 folder. But without seeing the event log output, I can't be sure. Could be a case of the same problem, but different cause!
Hope this helps
Ben
Hi all
The script author came to the rescue, you can see the thread on http//
Turns out I was using an old version of the script and there was a typo in the most recent one.
All fixed now, full version of FTK Imager installed (although I still have no idea why FTKI Lite won't install in PStart - but that's not a WinFE problem.
Merry Christmas everyone when it comes
Cheers
P.S. Most recent script (2.2) crashes WinBuilder at startup with a couple of error messages, I suspect Roy will fix that might quick. If you have 2.1 it works fine with the typo corrected, if anyone needs it urgently I can supply
Cheers again
There is a new script written by Colin Ramsden you can download from
Instead of using diskpart, it is simply point-and-click (although developing it surely wasn't simple…).
As it happens, I've created ISOs with Royal's script and the one from Colin just today. Haven't burned the ISOs yet as - wait for it, in an organisation employing more than 30,000 people - we have no blank CDs in management HQ!!
Thanks for the heads-up though
No problem! Use a USB D
My problem is quite different. I used the "(Nearly) Perfect" instructions for creating a WinFE disk and had no problem there, adding FTK Imager (2.9) and A43. I ran into the issue trying to run FTK Imager from the bootdisk. The application seems to run fine until I try to add an item to the evidence tree ("Contents of a Folder"). After hitting the Next button, I go to browse the folder structure to pick out the desired folder, but when the "Browse For Folder" window opens up, it's blank between "Select the folder to add as evidence" and the "Folder" text box above the OK button. The other source options seem to work okay, and I can type in a path, but I cannot select one from the tree if I need to burrow. When I run the same application from both the hard disk and from the mounted ImageX disk, it runs fine. I've tried this with both version 2.9 and version 3.1 of FTK Imager and get the same result.
Any help would be **greatly** appreciated.
Thanks in advance!
