I called the Americas office in Normon, OK.

I see you are from OK. Are they local to you?

m7esec,

That unit from Cooldrives.com looks perfect. Have you seen any other distributors that sell a setup this? They tell me they will not ship to CAN

Thanks

I'm not quite sure what the immediate need is for something like this. I mean, granted, the SATA bus is very very fast – but, you must be aware that we don't have drives coming close to using the bus speeds. I agree that converters and such do slow transfer down somewhat, but the drives are not fast enough for any of this to matter at this point.

Yes the SATA bus is very very fast and we are talking about disk to disk transfers. I'd take a 1.5 or 3gb/sec transfer rate over a 400/800mb rate any day.

I have no idea what you're referring to. I don't know what kinds of drives you're working with. A typical hard drive, even a high end one sold to a consumer can only manage about 65MB/s sustained transfer. At the absolute maximum, you're looking at about 110MB/s.

Now, Firewire 800 handles (as a maximum 98.304MB/s). Now, unless you're referring to the small amount of time a drive can manage to push 110MB/s, or if you're working with terribly high end drives, there is barely any gain. And that minor gain is certainly not worth this trouble.

Sometimes the older Guidance Software Fastbloc Lab Edition units come up for sale now and then. These are also IDE to IDE write blockers.

You can also look to a unit like the Hard Copy, Logicube, of ICS Solo for stand alone solutions.

I'm waiting for IDE/SATA/USB to eSATA solutions to start appearing before I plunk down on another write blocker. I've heard rumors from some of the companies but nothing has come to market, yet. Hopefully soon though.
