I am trying to decide whether to buy a new computer with Windows 7 (64-bit), or build an computer with XP (32-bit). The computer will be used primarily for data recovery. Do you think the data recovery software market has caught up enough, compatibility wise, to make the switch to Windows 7, or should I stick with what works and go with XP for now?
Tell us the pros and cons of 32 bit vs 64 then we can help you weigh in on that issue.
Most DR work isn't going to be done in windows anyway. Not if there is a legit problem with the drive. You aren't going to be clearing P and G lists, rewriting firmware, etc. with Get my files back or Stellar Phoenix.
If you're not sure, why not go with Windows 7 32-bit and run your DR software in XP Mode?
I've just purchased a Windows 7 64 bit PC. The only problem has been getting device drivers for 'older' hardware, eg dongles and SCSI boards. Device drivers have to be certified now, which I gather is an expensive operation.
The XP box works for the few programs that don't like Windows 7.
If it was my only system I would think it was restricting, but as one of a few, it is good.
