I am currently finalising the details for the Introduction to Connection Records course and wondered what do you want to know? Training is not about the trainer. It’s about your learning!

Currently the course will contain lectures and practical exercises with lots of group interaction, sharing experiences and learning together. However, it would be great to hear what other areas you would like to be addressed on the course or other suggestions about layout/sessions.

If you win the student place, what’s missing from the course that you would like to know more about?

The current course content is provisionally as follows

Day 1
4 practical exercises will be provided after each relevant section.

An Introduction to UK connection records and obtaining the appropriate records for your case – Covering RIPA information, The Data Retention Regulations, Freedom of Information and court orders. Discussing the information available in connection records, subscriber information and voicemail.

Connection charting and interpreting connection information - Covering how to connection chart with paper based or electronic records. Introduction to interpreting the information available in connection records.

Interpreting handset and SIM card evidence – looking at ACPO guidelines for dealing with mobile based evidence. Interpretation of the meaning of evidence on mobile telephone devices. What do the time stamps mean? What about the absence of information? etc. Problems with handset examination data.

Combining the evidence in connection records with handset evidence – Combining the two forms of data to potentially provide a more complete listing of connection behaviour. Calculating time offsets for mobile devices and applying this to evidence on the handset. For example, attempting to establish the date and time accuracy of a video/image file.

Functionality testing with a mobile telephone – What is functionality testing and how to conduct it. When is it necessary and what can it achieve in your case.

Day 2

This day will include a small exercise in the morning and a 1 ½ - 2 hour group exercise involving a test case to consolidate the connection record learning.

Recap of previous day and exercise.

Investigating anomalies and differences in connections records – looking at error rates and investigating inconsistencies in records, duplications and other issues that may be present.

An introduction to cell site analysis – introduction to the basics of the area. Discussion of when the analysis can provide very useful results. Looking at the limitations and the different kinds of analysis (including server maps etc. and obtaining these from the network providers). Past case examples. Investigating how cell information in records can sometimes assist in providing opinions about telephone connections regarding how they have been answered/received.

Investigating the types of data extracted from network tools – Basic investigation into the examination and analysis of the network tool data. An opportunity to use a network monitoring tool.
