OK, this could be a bit of a doozie!

As the subject states, I am trying to run the Jonathan Zdziarski method on a test iPhone [3G] in the latest Nutty Ubuntu 10 running in Oracle's free VirtualBox [phew…]

Before I continue, apologies if this is in the wrong forum, wasn't sure whether to put it in phones or general (as its a PC problem as much as a phone problem) Please move as required!

Right oh…

So the VM is working spot on and its a lovely, lovely full install, with fully working internet connectivity and I have downloaded the latest and legacy Jonathan Zdziarski Automated Tools. Opened my Terminal, connected my test phone (and is recognised via the VM and pops up in Ubuntu) and when I come to run my shell script it basically does nothing (

Has anybody managed to do this, firstly in Ubuntu on its own, successfully and secondly in my method, via a VM? (I don't think VirtualBox or VMWare should make a difference)

some info if it helps

- iPhone is 3G (running 3.1.2 firmware) unlocked
- Am running it under MULTIPLATFORM_IOS3
- No error messages on running ./boot-liverecovery.sh
- Am running as root
- is a basic / full ubuntu install (no additional s/w. Install is only a week old)
- Have tried against an iPhone 4, same problem

Any help is much appreciated! This is part of next years PDR (all those LE will know what that is Grrr…!) lol

Thanks,
4R

EDIT Appears that JZ released tools for everything on Linux method expect 3.1.2! Looks like I will have to update the firmware to test this as the iPhone 4 is tied up now!

When you say that it does nothing do you mean there is nothing appearing as output to the terminal?

Hi Beetle,

Yep. After running the shell command, it basically does a couple of carriage returns and brings back the prompt, with no errors?

This sounds typical of privileged user problems. Were you running the scripts as sudo?

Yep, I am running as sudo su

Here is a screen shot of what happens… no informative error messages!

EDIT I nabbed the iPhone 4 and tried it against this!

I am not familiar with these scripts. Where does the output of the script point to? Is it possible that it is generating output but can't write the file?

haha, you and me both so )

I'm only just starting with the JZ method and can just about manage my way around Linux without getting in too deep!

I originally had to change all the permissions on the files / folders to read/write and allow to execute, so it should be able to write (somewhere) but I can check. I wonder if I can run the script ina verbose mode with logging? that might give me something!

Quick update before I go for a pint…

I just downloaded a free crappy shell script and it ran no problem. So it appears its a JZ issue and not an Ubuntu or permission issue! Grrr…

Until Monday…

Ok, this is how the JZ method worked for me-

Make sure you are using Ubuntu 10.4 LTS

You need to navigate to your script directory

chmod +x on all the scripts.

sudo bash [script name] from within the script directory

Should ask for your password at this point and run through whichever of the automated tools you are trying to use.

I had some issues trying to run these scripts on Ubuntu 11.04 but all worked fine on MacOS and 10.04LTS

Hope this was of help. )

As my good friend pointed out, looks like this aint going to happen (

Q. Will the Linux tools work from a VM?

A. Unfortunately, no, as the tools need raw level USB access. Tools like VMWare don't support this. You can, however, boot from the LiveCD and run Linux without needing to install it.

Dang!
