lo.

im doing a university project regarding a kind of ethereal equivalent with a more forensic slant.

Currently im researching the legal aspects of using such programs in criminal, and civil investigations and also just day to day usage by say network administrators.

im aware of the computer misuse act, but are there any other acts or laws in the uk which i could examine which may be relevant to network sniffing / packet capture etc with regards to both criminal and case examiner view points.

Basically any kind of security product that identifies vulnerabilities, or exploits them could leave the user and/or developer in alot of trouble.

Slashdot has the details regarding germanys approach …

For a SysAdmin to run such tools regularly, you need to watch the DPA and RIPA has some things to say about intercepting communications.
