MSAB And Kovar & Associates Agree To Partner On Drone Forensics Work

MSAB and Kovar & Associates announced today that the two companies have signed an agreement to work together to expand the drone forensics capabilities offered by MSAB.David Kovar, president and founder of Kovar & Associates, is recognized as a leading expert on drone forensics. He will serve as a subject matter expert and consultant to MSAB, supporting MSAB’s development of expanded drone forensics capabilities in its leading products, XRY and XAMN Spotlight. XRY enables users to extract data from mobile devices, including drones. XAMN Spotlight is the analytical tool for visualizing, searching and analyzing that data.

XRY now supports extraction of data from a number of popular drone models, allowing investigators to see flight path data and other data that can assist their investigations and enforcement activities involving illegal drones.

In the last two years, there has been a significant increase in the use of drones for illegal activities, such as smuggling contraband into prisons, flying drugs across international borders, and for illegal intrusions into restricted areas, such as airports, power stations and government facilities. In the UK, police have seized more than 90 drones engaged in illegal activities in the last year, including incursions at 12 prisons. In Iraq, ISIS has increased its use of drones against Iraqi and U.S. forces in the last 12 months.

At his company, Kovar is leading the development of URSA – Unmanned & Robotics Systems Analysis – a suite of tools designed to collect, integrate, analyze, and present UAV related data for many purposes including fleet management, criminal investigations, failure analysis, and predictive analysis. He has worked in digital forensics and cyber security since the mid 90’s and, prior to founding his own company, led EY’s U.S. incident response program.
