I know that the field is heavily influenced by the law enforcement angle. I'm wondering, if someone just wants to become fairly good at computer forensics for intellectual curiosity, isn't worried about preservation of evidence from the law enforcement angle, and doesn't want to go through the troubles of getting a professional degree or get accredited, what base of knowledge would a person need? I'm guessing that general things like familiarity with operating systems and strong intellectual curiosity are a must. I'm wondering if more specific things like knowing how to code C++, Java, etc are needed.

Computer Security is a good base of the variances of intellectual requirements of CF. Next would probably be scripting and coding like PERL and C+. Thirdly would be Computer Network Analysis. Last would be Database with knowledge of SQL language and architecture.
