Hello Everyone

I am a student at the University of Northumbria at Newcastle, currently in my 3rd year for Computer and Digital Forensics. We are looking for participants for my final year project. This project involves Investigating how business policy and I.T. infrastructure affect the way forensic practitioners are able to gather evidence.

This project requires digital forensics practitioners to participate in an interview. In this interview, they will be asked the following questions.

What they believe to be the main issues in business policy and I.T. infrastructure which can affect the ways which a forensic practitioner is able to gather evidence
What they consider to be suitable mitigation's to those issues in business policy and I.T. infrastructure.
Whether they believe that businesses would be willing to implement the suggested mitigation's into their business policy and I.T. infrastructure and if so, why?
How many years they have been working as a forensic practitioner.

All interviews will be completed online.

All information collected in the interview will be held anonymously. Participants may provide contact details for the purpose of further enquiries; however, this information will not be utilised within the study itself.

Participants will have a deadline in which they can opt out their interview findings. There is no deadline for opting out your contact information. All data will be destroyed 30 days after the project has been completed

Deadline to opt out – 02/15/2021
Data destroyed – 30 days after publication results.

Project Overview

This project is investigating how business policy and I.T. infrastructure affect the way forensic practitioners are able to gather evidence. This involves identifying what forensic practitioners perceive to be the main issues in business policy and I.T. infrastructure which can affect how they are able to gather evidence as well as what they consider to be suitable mitigation's of those issues. This data is collected through interviews.

The data collected through interviews is utilised in creating a test environment which simulates an environment based on the scenario provided in the interview involving the issues in business policy and I.T. infrastructure. This is done using virtual machines. This scenario has an ISO (simulating evidence) added to one of the virtual machines. The process of a forensic practitioner performing a forensic investigation on the simulated system is then performed by me using forensic tools including hard disk analysis tools and network analysis tools. Data such as any issues involved in collecting data, the time taken to retrieve data and the integrity of the data are then recorded. The test scenario is then changed to utilise the data received in the interview regarding the suggested mitigation's to issues in business policy and I.T. infrastructure. The data collected from that test scenario is then compared to the scenario before mitigation's.

The data collected throughout the project will result in a list of recommendations for businesses in order to improve their business policy and I.T. infrastructure in order to be more secure and improve forensic readiness.
