I am looking for further training in the USA (eastern coast), in particular, in mobile telephone forensics.

I understand that the field has several areas (thanks TrewMTE).

I sorted the list of most to least interested, or more specifically the most to least likely to get work in/access to work.

- Mobile/Smart Phones
Android, iPhone, Blackberry - we have a ton of these, and would like to learn more. I have experience with BitPim on CDMA phones.

- Network Analysis
I have various infrastructure experience ranging from radio based MANs, to global WANs.

- Cell Site Analysis (CSA)
I have some experience from the WiFi side of things, but I do understand things work slightly differently for at the higher frequencies.

- Call Record Analysis (CRA)
This is just drudgery. I have had the "fortune" cry to sludge through boxes and boxes of AT&T / AT&T Wireless records when CD delivery of the records was still just a fantasy.

- SIM/USIM
Other than reading NAND ICs from flash drives and tacking them together to recover data, I have little as it relates to phones.

Any ideas? ?

http//www.patctech.com/ Good training in cellular technology. I’ve taken this class and would highly recommend it if you have a chance to take it. They also have an intro into Forensic Data Recovery. Most of the class time focused on BitPim and importing the data into FTK. There was also a familiarization with MobileEdit, DeviceSeizure, Oxygen, SecureView and Cellebrite.

http//www.geocell.us/ Another excellent cellular technology class. I’ve taken the two day class, but Breck offers a three day that deals with mapping which I hope to later this year. Breck has been doing this for about 10 years and has a wealth of experience.

http//www.nw3c.com/index.cfm Basic cell phone investigations. I’ve taken this class and it focused heavily on the manipulation of data with Excel. This course does spend a bit more time discussing network structure, but it did not stress 2702, 2703 and other laws. It does not cover text content or enhanced ranging data (RTT/PCMD). This will compliment any of the previous mentioned classes quite well, but for an initial class you would leave not learning much in regard to actual investigations. The instructors were very knowledgeable in their field, but they were not cops and not conducting investigations on a daily basis.

http//www.cellulardataresources.com/ I’ve heard nothing but good things about this class. I believe it too focuses on data manipulation through Excel, but I’ve heard what Brent does is just short of amazing.

http//www.phxtrainingcouncil.com/ I don’t know much about this class, but I was told that Sy has done some work with enhanced ranging data. Whether or not that transitioned into being part of the course of instruction I don’t know. I communicated with Sy a couple of months ago and while he has been busy with some other aspects of his business, he still does classes from time to time.

http//www.bkforensics.com/MPSC.html They have an online course which I have not taken. Prior to taking the test ($25.00) they will send you an instruction manual. If you were to read through it once or twice you shouldn’t have a problem. I did notice the test was timed so it’s good to actually READ that manual!

Mobile Data Device Recovery sponsored by US Secret Service in Hoover, Alabama. My understanding is that you have to be sponsored by your local Secret Service Office. I know the response to this class was overwhelming.

I know these are not East Coast based companies, but they do travel.

If you would like me to give you a more detailed description of the first two classes I mentioned let me know.

My feeling is that training in this area is in short supply, but if there are other classes available I'like to know about them.

http//www.mobileforensicsinc.com/ They have both classroom and online training. I've attended the one-day "Bitpim and Cellular Phone Artifacts" online class and was very pleased with the quality of instruction.
