Hello,

I would like to find out if anyone thinks that the Professional Practice in Digital Forensics and Security MSc/Pg Cert/ Pg Dip at De Montfort University worth doing? The Masters program is done in collaboration with 7safe. The first 7 modules are 7Safe certificates, the 8th and 9th module are Advanced Topics in Forensics & Security and MSc Project respectively.

I am a student in the caribbean wishing to do a masters in digital forensics in the UK.

I already have BSc in Information Technology, Certificates in Comptia A+, Network+, Security+ and CHFI.

Can anyone suggest to me what should be my next step, if doing a masters would be beneficial in the field of Forensics.

Thank you

Hi.

I think having the degree will ultimately get your foot in the door faster if you want to pursue it as a career. After that, it will all be based on your ability to learn and gather experience in the field. I haven't met anyone with a degree in forensics yet, so I can't say how well-education someone is right out of university vs. someone who came out of a 3-week forensics certification school. Hopefully the schooling will teach you the business and ethics of working in forensics as well as the skills needed to perform the task at hand.

Good luck to you, mate.

For me personally I would stop at the Degree and go and get some work experience hopefully in the future if you get into a decent company then they would fund your Forensics Masters if that is what you decided to do.

I started working in the IT Security field for the Government and now head up the Forensics team. I have found training courses to be more useful - I have sat the following courses which I highly recommend.

SANS 408 - Computer Forensics - Really good overall introduction into forensics and shows you a wide variety of tools to get the job done. Really worth doing this course.

Encase Training - Crucial to try and get some training in one of the major forensic tool suppliers whether it be Encase like I sat or FTK, X-Ways etc

Next month I am due to sit FTS training and Cellebrite to get a more in-depth knowledge of mobile device forensics.

I have considered doing a masters but I feel I get more use out of the week long courses where I can pick and choose what I want to do. A masters is a big commitment.

Good luck with whatever you choose, happy to answer more questions.

Thank you, i will consider doing the courses on short term basis it sounds plausible. If it is cheaper and will get me the same recognition, then its not such a bad idea. I best weigh these options and see which one suits me.

Thank You once more for responding.
