I want to have a career in the Computer Forensic/Security field. When I researched it, it said you can have a major related to Computer Science or Criminal Justice…IDK which one would be better for me.
My options are
1.)MajorCIS in Criminal Justice
Minor Computer Science

2.)MajorCriminal Justice
Minor Computer Science

The school I'm applying is CUNY John Jay, and it doesnt offer computer science as major, only as a minor.

I would like to go there for graduate school for Forensic Computing.

What do you guys think?

From what I have heard thus far, be sure law enforcement is a career you want to do because you want to make a difference, not just to fill a need to get into digital forensics. I hear because of unions being involved there are issues like seniority that will keep you doing regular police work (non-technical) possibly for years before you can get a forensics position. I am in no way an expert on the topic only relaying a repeated message heard on several occasions. They say it is possible but just to do it knowing all this before hand and willingly accept the facts. I hope that helps in some way. Good luck!

Greetings,

There is no hard and fast answer. If you ask around, you'll find all sorts of different paths were taken to get people to where they are in the industry now. The education is only part of the answer, what you do with the education is more important. Further, you need to be passionate about what you're doing. If you're taking CIS only for the checkbox on your resume, perhaps it'd make more sense to spend your time on something you're more interested in.

If you really want to go to grad school for forensic computing, are you sure that a minor in CS from John Jay will properly prepare you?

Also, why go to grad school? That's another 2 - 8 years where you're not out working for the gov't or a company. Mind you, there are some very good reasons to get an advanced degree, I'm just wondering what yours are.
