Hello,

I have worked in digital forensics since leaving university and now have seven years experience behind me as a forensic analyst and for the last year and a half as a team leader.

I am currently considering whether it is time for a change. However I feel that the skills and knowledge developed and used day to day are relatively niche and do not always fit into what companies appear to be looking for.

Additionally there appears to be more of a move towards Cyber Security. Which is something I have little knowledge.

I was wondering if anybody else had had such experiences or advice that could be offered? I would be especially interested to hear of any advice regarding training or certification that may help. For example in the Cyber Security side of things. There appears to be so many different options, but don't know what would be best.

Many thanks in advance.

One of the most respected and asked for qualifications is ISC2's CISSP.

This is a good, broad foundation in the security space, and I've never regretted doing mine (something like 16 years ago now). [ Which reminds me, I need to pay my membership fees … ]

Other than that, the ISACA qualifications are also very highly regarded ( CISM, CISA etc. )

In reality, I more or less made my career off the back of the CISSP and having been a UNIX SysAdmin ( therefore having a fairly in depth understanding of things like TCP/IP … ) The only other qualifications that I've had are an ISECOM OPSA and, although not strictly speaking a "qualification" I was a registered CLAS consultant.

Just a word of warning - remember that the grass is always greener on the other side - I've given up security recently to go to Forensics full time, and, although I'm technically making less now, my work life balance is much better and I'm happier for it …
