I have been looking for the longest time, using indeed, linkedin etc, and I am wondering where or how I can find a job.

I have 3+ Years experience, MSc in Digital Forensics from a UK Univrsity, MEng and BEng.

I also do not require sponsorship to work.

So far I am having a very very hard time finding any jobs at all…maybe there is a secret place I don't know about? haha…

Anyway, any one got any suggestions.

Hi,

I very seriously looked into emigrating to Canada many years ago. I had put in my application and I scored more than the required 70 points out of 100 (as it was at the time). There was no reason I wouldn't be admitted but I was having trouble finding job opportunities whilst waiting for the application to be processed. In the end I decided to stay for many reasons, [need] reasons rather than [want] reasons.

I established at the time that the very great majority of digital forensics jobs in law enforcement were filled with sworn officers and not with civilians, which is more common here. As such I would have to become a Police Officer first and having completed all of the required time on standard duty, could qualify for specialist positions. By that time I would have been out of digital forensics for at least three years.

I think this may be your problem. Most of the positions will be shut to you and other government jobs, (provincial and federal), require you to be a Canadian citizen or at least to have dual nationality. Again you have to have been living there for some time before you can qualify for this.

Private sector forensics/e-Discovery/due dilligence work might be your best option although the Canadian economy has contracted a little too, more so because other countries aren't buying as many of their exports. That might mean it's more difficult to find work in that field too.

Are you already living over there or still in the UK? Have you applied for permanent residency yet?

Your options are apply for residency and just go no matter what, although it will probably take 2-3 years. Get yourself work in mainstream IT, or anything vaguely similar and keep your skills up to date as much as you can. At some point in the future opportunities will come your way and you'll already be over there working. Maybe keep a few quid back to pay for yourself to do a EnCase refresher when you see a possibility of getting back in, so you are immediately more employable.

Alternatively you might decide to wait and move once there are opportunities. That way you keep your skills fresh and if you get an offer they might sponser a speeded up application process, if that is still an option, it certainly was when I looked.

If you are over there then I don't think I can suggest much. I know that Canadians will move very significant distances for good jobs if they have to, more so than we British are prepared to do. Maybe there will be work in Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver etc and if so would you be prepared to move from Ontario. I personally love Alberta because of the Rockies. I could spend every day of my life there.

I don't know if any of that helps. Probably not but I've typed it now, so…..

Good luck

Steve

I work for the provincial government in Ontario, Canada in the field of digital forensics.

I was just recently promoted to Forensics Co-ordinator, and in that capacity conducted interviews for Forensics Specialists.

I suspect that we will be posting another position within the next month or so. I will keep the board informed.

Also, Telus has just acquired a forensics firm and are hiring 5 - 8 Forensics Specialists for their shop.

All these jobs are based out of Toronto, as far as I know.
