DFICSI,

'as little as 90GBP an hour'

I think realistically you could take a third off of that and probably some more!

crashed

P.S I don't do work for the MET for that exact reason.

What I've heard (from multiple sources) is that the figure DFICSI quotes is three times higher than what the 'winning' bidders are getting. I can't see how any company can provide quality forensic work and be profitable at those rates.

Apply some vaseline and heat them with a hair drier…
The real issues are when you feel the pebbles under the sole. roll

Here's a helpful hint… they can't. But if they don't go that low they go out of business. Personally I would say if you were reliant on such crappy income, let it go and find something else to do.

Let's also throw into the mix that the largest income from forensic work in the UK comes from outsourced police work.

I would venture to say this is not the case in the USA.

Most of the forensics and eD work I have been asked are civil cases, from the private sector.

So what is a hourly good rate to charge for public sector digital forensic? Please provide a justification for these fees, too.

(Not trolling btw, a genuine question)

Same in the UK - the forensic departments of KPMG, Deloitte, PwC, BDO, Navigant, etc , etc, make substantially more income than the much smaller forensic specialist firms make from outsourced police work.

Answer costs + profit.

Currently the rate available from outsourced work barely covers costs. What do you think such thin margins mean for the quality of the service provided?

Fortunately, we took the decision early on not to bother at all with outsourced public sector work.

That's kind of dodging the question. If £90 is not enough, what is?

I know that some companies that won the MET contract, for example, are charging as little as 90GBP per hour

Early in 2011, I was informed by a LE customer that they were outsourcing phones at £25ph to one provider and a fixed cost of £160 per handset from another provider for whatever the OIC wanted - logical or physical.

The first provider can only frankly be pressing the button on XRY, not caring about the output and printing the report. A large volume of handsets were being returned unexamined. My customer was as dismayed as I but was under pressure from the bean counters.

The second provider will be making a half decent profit from some phones and, no doubt, ceasing other examinations prematurely as their profit threshold is reached. Nonetheless, they likely provided an improved service over the first provider.

If £90 is not enough, what is?

I was done with LE outsourcing when I was asked to consider less than £60ph. And I would only consider a rate that low for an arrangement of regular work, an expectation which the bean counters consider outrageous.
