I've generated a VMDK configuration file from a dd flat image using raw2VMDK. On attempting to load it in VirtualBox I get a VERR_NOT_SUPPORTED error while VMware Workstation reports 'the system cannot find the file specified' when pointing it at the VMDK file while creating a new virtual machine.

This is the first time I've used raw2VMDK and if I could get it to work looks like it'll be a very handy tool, though its online help resources are rather limited. Any pointers (including those of the sucking-egg variety) as to what versions you've successfully used it with/how you got it to boot the image would be gratefully received. Thanks.

Haven't used it in a while, so things may have changed, but as far as I recall, the file that you hand over to the program becomes the basic image file – the vmdk files just point to it.

That is, you can't remove the dd file.

More generally there are several types of VMDK files.
http//sanbarrow.com/vmdk/disktypes.html

What you want to do (since you have a RAW - or "dd-like") image is to use a "flat" VMDK descriptor file, see also here

http//www.vm-aware.com/2008/06/recreating-missing-vmdk-descriptor-files/

A tool is here

You can use Clonedisk
http//reboot.pro/8480/
to do the converision, also.
