ADLab index search oddities

I got some odd results recently while doing an index search in ADLab 3.4.2.

Looking for instances of a first name, "markus", that is also spelled "m@rkus". I tried two different index searches, expecting the same results (or maybe slightly more from the option 2)

1. m?rkus
2. m(w/1)rkus

With "m@rkus", the '@' should be ignored by dtSearch (the search engine used by ADLab), basically breaking "m@rkus" into two words, "m" and "rkus" with a ' ' between. "markus" should remain as one word.

However, the results are vastly different and appear to be mutually exclusive (searches ran separately btw)

Option 1 gives me instances of "markus" but not "m@rkus"
Option 2 gives me instances of "m@rkus" but not "markus"

The only explanation that I can see is if wildcard searches work within a single word only and proximity searches only span words.

Access Data's help desk wasn't any help and I don't see anything in the documentation for AdLab or dtSearch that would explain the behavior.

Any ideas?
