Attachment sizes

Doing some experiments to see what happens when I try to pretend I sent an attachment on a certain date, by editing and adding an attachment to an already sent email.

It seems that in some scenarios, the size of the faked attachment as displayed by the email program when opening the email from the  sent folder  is larger than than the size displayed when the attachment is sent legitimately. Why would this be?
