With MM/PC do verify if it will run on Windows 7 and what the annual support fee includes

Last time I looked at NovaXChange ( along time ago) it only handled a few basic formats. Again check for Windows 7 support

Octane - make sure it supports any old tape formats you may require

On all products, check for support of new drive interfaces, such as USB, SATA. Also what support there is for new tape formats as they are released by 'backup' companies.

jaclaz my google kung fu had found that article and it is indeed a good read P

mscotgrove MMPC will run on Windows and the annual support fee is 15% of whatever the current cost is at renewal time. They told me it supports Win 7 32/64 and will support the USB tape drives. No comment on future tape format support.

NovaXchange no Win 7 support and you are correct fairly limited tape format support, but really the only entry level affordable option.

Octane seems to have the best compatibility, now if I can just sweet talk my friend and go down to his office to see it in action…. )

We have an old version of MMPC and it's pretty good with old tape formats.

It's fine for most things apart from if its an exchange data store backup. What it restores in that case can't be used. (encase & FTK can't process the restored exchange data)

My recommendation is that you use tape backup software.
I have done many tape restores in Sydney and for about 90% of cases they are backed up with "Backup Exec" and the rest mostly "Netbackup" (horrible to use).
Government usually uses Netbackup. I would expect its similar in Perth.

We usually use backup software to restore the tapes and we purchase most of our tape drives and software off ebay.
Tape libraries recommended for the big jobs. New drives are good if you can get them.

jaclaz, bookmarked for future reading, thank you )

hydrocloricacid I do recall seeing Netbackup mentioned somewhere in my diggings so I will look into that and BackupExec as well. Thanks for the advice it's good to get some information from a bit closer to home. As many Perth companies are either connected to or copy their Sydney brothers there is probably a good chance of coming across those formats.

I will look in to these as options as well.

thanks for the advice and information gentlemen (or ladies) D
