Not related to a case, but doing data recovery for a friend. It is a pin locked iPhone 5 which took a bit of a tumble.
The screen will not turn on. The phone is on, but the screen is completely black.
They need pictures off it, but every tool I know requires interaction with the screen (if nothing else, to remove the pin lock).
Any advice? Best case scenario, is there a connector inside that may have been knocked loose?
Terry
Do you have the original machine that it was being synced with?
If you do then that does not require the pin entry to retrieve the photos, it will have a trust relationship. If they had been using a mac then iPhoto should open. If it's a windows box, then you should be able to access the DCIM folder.
Alternatively use the syncing machine to produce a backup, then parse the backup - it should contain the photos.
I don't understand why he would not just have the screen replaced, as the phone is apparently still working?
This should be a lot cheaper than trying to extract the data.

The phone was never synced with a computer, only iCloud. In viewing the contents of iCloud, they said they only had pictures from the last 30 days.

Prior to my being involved, they got a new phone. So, all they really care about right now is getting the data rather than fixing the phone.
The iPhone5 is relatively easy to disassemble (removing the screen)

and it does of course have a connector, though it is not probable that it can "get loose", as it is kept down by screws.
Mind you, I tend to be extremely cheap 😯 , but possibly investing less than 100 bucks into a new screen assembly they could most probably resell it for something between 300 and 400 US$.

Any chance it is in DFU mode? If so hold down both the power and home buttons for 10 seconds to restart (if you can restart the phone).

A screen replacement costs $99 in Sydney and I am sure this will be cheaper in N. America or Europe. This way they have a spare iPhone.

Yes. a huge number of iPhone users freak out at their first encounter with the iPhone black screen, and most a black screen is not exactly an experience most users want to see on their phone display. This usually solves the issue of a black screen. If the warranty period for your iPhone is over, you can have it repaired by professional technicians.
Thanking you!!!
