I have to admit when I was a kid using windows 98, I did so without the use of a firewall or anti-virus. Even for a period when xp came out I did not use an anti-virus. No wonder xp keep kept breaking every other month. This resulted from a lack of awareness. Looking back now it was pure idiocy.

I may have jumped the gun with my comment regarding the pubic been apathetic. A lot probably do install security software. Whether its put to good use is another question.

I agree that there is certainly a level of responsibilty for the non expert public to educate themselves in exactly the same way as a degree student is also expected to put their own effort into learning their chosen subject.

But in reality (I think) people are more likely to put the effort in to learn about something is the information is in a form that is personal to them. Much like Zoidberg said. That doesn't apply to everyone of course. Perhaps there need to be a discussion on ways to engage those who are suffereing from a lack of awareness.
