All,
Here's what I'm looking for…
I'd like to get recommendations from the community regarding a freeware tool that will encrypt files on Windows systems. What I'm looking for is a secure means to provide files to another party that may not have PGP or any other special software installed. I'd like to be able encrypt the file(s) with a passphrase, and then ship the file to the other party, and provide them with the passphrase out of band.
Basically, I'm looking for a freeware tool that uses known encryption algorithms (AES, TwoFish, Blowfish, whatever) to encrypt files, and provides a stub similar to a PGP SDA file.
Thoughts?
Thanks,
H
Truecrypt perhaps, it also works on CD/DVD.

Darren,
I'd thought of that myself, but I guess I have to apologize for not being clear…
All I want to do is encrypt *one file* so I can send it to someone else. I do not want to have them download and install TrueCrypt…all they should have to do is double-click the file, type in the passphrase, and the file gets decrypted. I'm looking for something similar to the PGP SDA capability.
Again, sorry for not being more clear.
Thanks,
Harlan
Harlan, No probs, I wanted to expand on what I posted but was in the middle of getting my daughter to school.
With Truecrypt you can set up a container with your file, and also burn the software to CD with the container. Setup an Autorun.ini to run Truecrypt when the CD is inserted, then the other person can enter the password. You can put the key file on the CD as well, but obviously keep the password separate. It is also possible to prepare a script to mount/dismount, etc at the click of a button.
I agree it's not a simple solution, but certainly does a good job for the price, and once you have the basic setup is not too hard to redo for new files.

Darren
I have used CipherWall Self-Decryptor with good results.

Darren,
> I agree it's not a simple solution,
Even so, thanks. That's pretty much the reason I rejected TrueCrypt (even though I downloaded a copy to work with myself)…as I said, I just need to send the file to the other person (via email, simplest approach) and have them double-click the file, enter the password, and that's it. Thanks again, though.
DCSO…I'll take a look, thanks.

I just had a quick look through google;
Crypto-lock at http//
or
Cryptomathic File2File at http//
or
Iron Key at http//
If I get some time will try them out.

Darren
I found these.

Darren,
Thanks! Based on the description, CryptoLock seems to be exactly what I'm looking for!
Thanks,
Harlan
H,
I just tried this one and it worked nicely.

Con passphrase must not exceed 7 char.
BUt it creates a self extraction file that prompts you for a password when You double click it.
