Does anyone know if there is is a whitepaper available somewhere that compares/reviews the different GPS Forensics solutions available on the market (Blackthorn, XRY, Cellebrite, Paraben, etc.)? I've looked on the NIST website and on gpsforensics.org and found nothing relevant.

I'm looking to buy a GPS forensics solution and would like your input on the products you've tested.

Personally, I have tested Blackthorn and it works well with the supported GPS devices and it's reporting in Google Earth is awesome. But I'm wondering if I might be better going with either Cellebrite Physical or XRY Physical as those products also allow me to perform cell phone examinations (I already have Cellebrite Logical as well as XRY logical). I also would like to know about the supported devices in all solutions and how frequent are the updates.

Thanks guys.

Greetings,

Also interested, but alas, I have no useful information to contribute in this matter.

We have Paraben Device Seizure, Susteen SecureView and Blackthorn 2. I am a Certified Blackthorn Examiner. GPS devices are very much like phones when dealing with them. I can tell you that Blackthorn does an outstanding job on GPS devices that it supports and they are adding support for new devices all the time. However, when Blackthorn cannot get the device for whatever reason, we fall back to Paraben and use it to acquire the device, if it is supported.

Otherwise, you are left with the manual examination methods just like on an unsupported phone.

Hello Larry,

Thanks for your reply. It's very useful.

I have 2 questions for you. Do you know if Blackthorn has been used and approved in court for criminal cases?

Also, have you tried verifying the results given by Blackthorn with another forensic tool to see if the given results are consistent from a tool to another?
