Hi everyone. Out of the blue I received an email re Hakin9's IT Security magazine.

Can't see any reports - good or bad - about it via Google or on here so was wondering if anyone out there has any feedback? Primary concern of course was is it safe to download?

Cheers

Is this the same one which also has a print copy? If so I've occasionally picked one up at the airport - overall pretty good I thought but could have done with better proofreading (a few too many typos).

Dunno about the hard copy Jamie, the email came out of the blue. Current issue is at http//hakin9.org/system/articles/attachment1s/13842/original/Network_Security_Hakin9_02_2011.pdf?1296645683

Re proof-reading - seems to have a strong Polish connection so perhaps that's a partial explanation.

Thanks

Heh - despite starting with a big CEH advert, it looks ok - not exactly ground breaking or deeply technical, but passable "infotainment" reading I'd say …

I think there is a hard copy - although I don't think I've ever seen one … The only InfoSec mag that I ever see in hardcopy ( other than Digital Forensics ) is 2600 … that can be quite good for a laugh too !

some years ago, I've been doing some translation and quality assurance for hakin9, especially for their german print version (they're based in poland, but have international writers).
Meanwhile they have moved to providing digital copies for free, which is highly welcome to me.

As already stated, there is a lot of "infotainment" in there, but from time to time there is also some really deep technical content of either well-known and respected, or of unknown, but brilliant people mostly from eastern europe.

Yes, the stuff I read a couple of years ago was pretty in-depth and interesting.

Hakin9 and "Software Press" company (publisher) has VERY NEGATIVE press in Poland

1) Articles in Hakin9 magazine are mostly created to advertise their "sponsors"
2) From year to year technical stage decreases
3) Lots of typo errors
4) Lots of unnecessary articles for example, from article about data recovery from virtual machines, Polish readers learned that… it's complicated. Nothing else.
5) No one want to bought monthly magazine that costs about 15 USD - everything was scanned and distributed on warez sites
6) Software Press recruting students on work practices. They don't participate in creating magazine, they just try to sell advertising space for 250 USD monthly salary (I just read about this on some polish forum)

The Hakin9 magazine used to be in print format and had to be purchased. At some point last year, the magazine switched to the electronic format and is now free. I agree with the other comments about the typos and the free version now contains a lot of advertisements. I try to overlook this and read their monthly magazines since there are occasional nuggets of information I find useful. For example, the June 2009 edition (this was the paid magazine but was available for free downloaded) had a few good articles discussing Windows FE (by Mark Remmert), timelines (by Harlan Carvey), and analyzing malicious PDFs (by Didier Stevens).

For the most part I haven’t had any issues with the frequent emails sent by the company since the magazine went the free route. I mostly ignore all of the emails since I only receive them for the notification about new issues and I don’t normally look at the sponsors or ads. However, a few months ago there was an email advertising a company that seemed questioned. I would pay closer attention to any companies in the ads if you're thinking about doing business with them.
