Hidden file-but how?

I analyzed an image using WINhex and it was able to carve out a file that was not showing up on the drive image directory view. Looking at the dates, the drive volume was made after the file was created. What are some of the techniques which can be sued to hide a file? I used autopsy and it could not locate the file.
