I am doing an indepth analysis on IM clients and was wondering if everyone could give a list of the IM clients they would like to see in a study. You can also include apps such as Skype and the like. Any help with this would be great.

IM clients on what systems? Are you only doing research on Windows-based IM clients, or are you also including Mac OS, Linux, etc?

The IM clients that I would like to see are
Windows
AIM
Yahoo
MSN
Trillian
Skype
Pidgin
Digsby
Miranda
ICQ
InstantBird
Google Talk

Mac OS
AIM
iChat
Skype (including how to parse the logs)
Adium
Proteus
Fire
InstantBird
Pidgin

Linux
Pidgin
InstantBird

That's all I can think of right now. The list could get bigger if you included phones in that as well, like BlackBerries and iPhones for two examples. Hopefully this will give you a good starting point, though.

I will be initially working on Windows based systems. I will then move on to MAC systems. I don't currently have plans for a unix/linux system but would do it if the requests came in.

The information above is great thanks so much. Anyone else know some please let me know.

For Windows, there's also Spark.

Nowadays Groove belongs to Microsoft, and is rather on the expensive side – it's software to support collaborative work securely – but it does include IM functionality.

It used to be possible to get a free version – for personal use – with somewhat limited functionality off the web page of Groove Networks (the original company – www.groove.net). The web pages are still accessible through the waybackmachine at www.archive.org, some of the old download links are dead, but it looks like some of the main download buttons seem to work still (yup … they do). You can also get a download link from a Microsoft Groove invitation from someone who has a license.
