I was wondering if anyone knows if MS Word documents contain markers much like JPEGs do in order to identify the various sections and if so, what are they.

discusses some aspects of Office metadata, mentions one marker, and includes a pointer to Harlan's code that'll search for metadata in document files. I suspect that examining that code will help you answer the question.
