Just a quick question which I'm having trouble finding the answer too on Google and Apple.
(This is half based on another post regarding a skype question I posted, but don't want to hijack my own thread)
I have a iPhone5 running IOS 6.1.4 and on it there is what appears to be a screenshot and its saved as IMG_####.PNG in the Camera Roll, then there are several versions of the same image, slightly changed with some stuff blurred out with a Blurring App and these are .JPG (again IMG### etc)
I tried to replicate this with my iPhone 5 running IOS 7.1.1 taking a screen shot and it immediately saved as a .JPG
My "assumption" is that Apple have change from PNG to JPG since IOS 6 to 7, however, my assumption would not stand up in court. Does anybody know if this is the case and if there is a change log or anything from apple.
When I try to find a 'comprehensive' list of changes, its just the usual cosmetic stuff I get returned from sites/blogs etc.
Thanks.
Also… side note. The PNG has no decent meta data. Just a created/Modified/Last accessed. Again, its an assumption, but its not putting the 'taken with' data as it was not technically taken with a camera? Would this seem legit?
How sure are you that the photo was taken with the iphone camera? And that it hasn't been synced from a computer to the camera roll folder?
I did a bit of reading to try and find 'what format does the iphone 5 ios 6 save photos as' but yeah, no love, but I did come across sync'ing, so more questions to help eliminate possibilities instead of answers is all I got sorry.
Yeah, syncing is a fear I have. I'm trying the simplest routes first. I will need to delve further I fear. However, the syncing issue puts me back to my first post about auto sycning between devices and distinguishing between the two.
I enjoy a challenge… but why on a Monday morning! |
Thanks for the response.
Two pieces of info (not necessarily useful).
1) iOS uses .PNG for screenshots (at least in some versions, but I found no evidence this changed)
2) the .PNG format used is non-standard (i.e. it uses a "pngcrush" for compressing it).

In your tests are you taking the screenshot with the Home pressed button+push of sleep/wake as in here?

or in some other way?

Hi,
Not sure if this helps but to test this i did a screenshot on my iPhone 5 version 7.1.1 and it was saved as a PNG. From what i have seen with iPhones it has not changed from PNG to JPG.
