what is the current status of jailbreaking in the UK? Is it legal but warranty voiding? can anyone point to some authority which supports whether it is or not? I believe it is not illegal in the US?

I assume by 'jailbreaking' you mean changing the OS on an iPhone to something other than iOS that's not produced by Apple - yes that is legal, although Apple will never touch it again.

However, changing the IMEI or S/N of ANY device is very illegal both in the US and the UK.
