Hi All,

I am looking for a forensic software to analyze photos to detect layers. I need to examine photos like jpg or png. I would like to be able to check with a good level of certainty if some parts of the photos were modified. I tried jpeg snoop or Irfan View but this does not provide that level of certainty. Is there a pro tool with the license for this type of jobs?

JPG file format doesn't support 'layers'.

They do, sometimes, support internal thumbnails. And not all editing tools will update the thumb(s).

@passmark - yes, that is right, however I am looking something rather like “an end product” of editing so for e.g. in Adobe Photoshop Menu File> Save As FILE Name+ JPG format or PNG.  In here I am not too sure if there would be original thumbnails still embedded. I am yet to test this.

So, I am rather looking for a tool that would tell me more about pixels saturation in certain areas, specific channel examinations and similar stuff. I am not that expert in this area but looking for a pro tool that I can use and learn.

There are a bunch of open source tools out there which address various aspects of what you are asking for. May I suggest that you take a look at the following material by Hany Farid ( or buy his book ... ) to get some specific search terms, and then you'll both be able to find the tools that you seek & understand what they are doing ! 🙂
