Mac Lion Serial Number location on HDD image

I have a Apple I-Mac HDD image and need to obtain the SN of the Mac the install belonged to. Does anyone now where this might be located ????

I believe its generated form the motherboard, so I am not even sure if it is persistent on the hard drive.

I am afraid that the S/N of the machine is not recorded on the HDD.
