I have a multiple hard drive images that have full disk encryption via Truecrypt.

I have installed the 14 day free trial of Mount Image pro V5.28 and also Truecrypt 7.1a

My thinking was I could mount the images (DD/EO1) in Mount Image Pro and then use Truecrypt to decrypt the various partitions within the image. I do have the passwords so thats not the issue.

I use the option within Truecrypt "Mount partition using system encryption without pre-boot authentication"

Now this method worked once with one of the images but for some reason now when I try to do the exact same method Truecrypt throws the message

"WARNING The host file/device is already in use!

Ignoring this can cause undesired …… etc etc

Continue mounting"

upon clicking YES to continue the mount process I get the error message
"Error, Cannot mount volume. The host file/device is already in use. Attempt to mount without exclusive access failed as well"

Has anyone else encountered this same problem?? The process must work because it has worked before hand but now everytime I get these errors. Nothing in my process has changed.

I tried FTK Imager to mount the image and truecrypt couldn't see the mounted drives, I have also tried OSFMount and same thing.

Any ideas appreciated or if more information is required then please do ask.

From what you report it sounds more as a "generic" OS issue than the "specific" tools you are using.

Which OS are you running?
Have you tried again starting from a "cold boot"?
Where is the image file? (thinking of permissions/ownership if NTFS)

It sounds like it is the Operating System that is making the file (or the virtual device made out of it) unusable.

We have just done this, with 7 exhibit(s) all truecrypt.

However we have used vmware to boot virtual instances.

worked fine for us, after a bit of tinkering

Jaclaz,
You were correct. It was the OS trying to take ownership of the mounted drive. I finally found that if I entered Device Manager, switched the mounted drive to 'Offline' and then turned it back onto 'Online' Truecrypt was then able to obtain exclusive access.

Thanks for the hint D

I was running Win 7 x64.
