No disrespect buddy but that's like asking 'what computers are available and what are they used for', it's a huge question!

By trawling through the Commercial and Open Source Software forums here you can learn about different software tools that the community use. How are they used?….well, I'm not sure where I would start.

Can I suggest spending time here, visiting www.guidancesoftware.com and www.accessdata.com and perhaps http//www.opensourceforensics.org/tools/index.html.

Also just looking at your question again it could mean 'what technologies are available to 'commit' cyber crime!' It is unlikely that these would be discussed on this forum.

If you then have some specific questions please post again.

Cheers

Nick

Lots of technologies are available, and they are used for good and evil. As the man (Albert Einstein) says Technological progress is like an axe in the hands of a pathological criminal.

Seems like a pretty vague topic and you could spin it a bunch of ways. From the title, I get the feeling that what I would be hearing would be light on the tech part of things. You could look at cryptography and secure erase programs and how they could be used by regular users for privacy and if that outweighs the bad side of criminals using it as well. Eavesdropping is a good topic to look at too.

Just tossing out ideas, hopefully you can give us some more direction as to where youre trying to head with things.

You’re an MSc student and you want help with your research project? No offence, but with such a vague question it looks as if you want us to do most of the work for you. Can you tell us what research you’ve conducted yourself on this subject, or what work you’ve done so far?

Use the "4"s when you write it. That should knock em dead. They know you're hip to the l33t speak.

What Cybercrime Issues ?
What Technology ?
How Who solves what ?

This is obviously incorrect, Your Masters dissertation would have a title/subject. It would require literary reviews, evaluations etc.
This must be some sort of joke

I agree. I’m unwilling to make any comments about the standard of spelling, grammar and the liberal use of the mobile phone lexicon, but I will say that somebody taking an MSc must have already attained a certain prerequisite level of education to enable them to at least make a start on this subject.

I’m always willing to help anybody on this forum, but I prefer to help those that have already made a little individual effort. I'm sure if you explain/post some of your own reserach to date the help will flood in.

That made me chuckle.

can i take my disseration as project ……. 4 this topic……

I too studied Digital Forenics for my dissertation, however after the initial wide (and vague) topic area which (as previously mentioned) is quite extensive i chose to specifically aim my research towards providing a demonstration of the effectiveness of The Sleuth Kit and Autopsy Forensic Browser by Brian Carrier. I would (as others have) suggest you narrow your topic in order to provide a dissertation that is a valuable contribution to the community, rather than a general overview of what people already know. (That was the mistake i almost made until i eventually came to a specific aim for my research).

i want to using encase 4 cybercrime Investigation……4 my disseratation………….

Initially i had contemplated using Encase for my dissertation, however the lack of funding did not allow me to obtain a license so that was one of the reasons i used The Sleuth Kit and Autopsy Forensic Browser tools instead.

Hope that helps.

Cheers

There is something I wonder seriously about, why do a lot of you people use time to bully this person who asking for help. I am also doing an MSc in Forensic computing and started to write on my dissertation and were I come from we use to help each other. I see there are not many people in this field, which have written down what they have learned by experience and I think when someone start to do such a thing they should be encourage to do so…not like some of you have done. I am from both the academic world and the Law Enforcement. To start writing a dissertation demand lot of work and I think it is quite brave of this person to just go to a public forum with all those knowledgeable persons in this field and ask for help.

On the other side I think when you are starting a research you need to ask yourself what you want to do a research about. What are you goals and what will you achieve with this project. The next question is what methodology you want to use in the project. Then you have to break up the project in different parts and do some priorities. When you have chosen your topic and formulated a problem for discussion and have some goals to work after (not just to finish a dissertation though)you need to start looking for references(books, articles, best practices, surf around the net and even look in to cases and do some case studies and make discussion with other students and collegues) which are relevant for the topic you have selected. But narrow it down as others have already told you. And I see one of those who have written a lot and are on different forums is Carvey asking critical Q but still polite and always trying to help those who’s asking, not bully them. When you start writing a dissertation you need to be very critical to you work. I hope you have a superviser at the UC.The academic world and even others in this field will be even more critical. So be open for the critical Q. Then I think you have a good basis to work on. If you need some help just send me a note.

Spiffy wink
