can i take my disseration as project ……. 4 this topic……

I too studied Digital Forenics for my dissertation, however after the initial wide (and vague) topic area which (as previously mentioned) is quite extensive i chose to specifically aim my research towards providing a demonstration of the effectiveness of The Sleuth Kit and Autopsy Forensic Browser by Brian Carrier. I would (as others have) suggest you narrow your topic in order to provide a dissertation that is a valuable contribution to the community, rather than a general overview of what people already know. (That was the mistake i almost made until i eventually came to a specific aim for my research).

i want to using encase 4 cybercrime Investigation……4 my disseratation………….

Initially i had contemplated using Encase for my dissertation, however the lack of funding did not allow me to obtain a license so that was one of the reasons i used The Sleuth Kit and Autopsy Forensic Browser tools instead.

Hope that helps.

Cheers

There is something I wonder seriously about, why do a lot of you people use time to bully this person who asking for help. I am also doing an MSc in Forensic computing and started to write on my dissertation and were I come from we use to help each other. I see there are not many people in this field, which have written down what they have learned by experience and I think when someone start to do such a thing they should be encourage to do so…not like some of you have done. I am from both the academic world and the Law Enforcement. To start writing a dissertation demand lot of work and I think it is quite brave of this person to just go to a public forum with all those knowledgeable persons in this field and ask for help.

On the other side I think when you are starting a research you need to ask yourself what you want to do a research about. What are you goals and what will you achieve with this project. The next question is what methodology you want to use in the project. Then you have to break up the project in different parts and do some priorities. When you have chosen your topic and formulated a problem for discussion and have some goals to work after (not just to finish a dissertation though)you need to start looking for references(books, articles, best practices, surf around the net and even look in to cases and do some case studies and make discussion with other students and collegues) which are relevant for the topic you have selected. But narrow it down as others have already told you. And I see one of those who have written a lot and are on different forums is Carvey asking critical Q but still polite and always trying to help those who’s asking, not bully them. When you start writing a dissertation you need to be very critical to you work. I hope you have a superviser at the UC.The academic world and even others in this field will be even more critical. So be open for the critical Q. Then I think you have a good basis to work on. If you need some help just send me a note.

And I think that if you look at many other posts in the this forum, you will see serious discourse about a number of topics. Your post was clear and to the point, and deserves a response. I can tell by your post you put some thought in to the message.

Now compare your quote to this

1. Cyber-crime Issues What Technologies Are Available and How They're Used

can any 1 help.. for my reacrch .. think………………………

The first line is clearly copy and pasted from [probably] the teacher's website. The second line shows that the poster can't even bother to spellcheck their work or form a simple sentence or use proper punctuation. Don't get me wrong - I'm not trying to be the language police - we call make slip ups, and a spellchecker won't catch it all - but it will catch things like "reacrch".

Now if whoiam took a minute or two and wrote something like

Can anyone recommend a resource that would provide an overview on Cyber-crime Issues What Technologies Are Available and How They're Used?

I think the response would have been completely different. [note this question is actually 4 characters less than whoiam's orginal post.]

The only way we learn about someone online is how well they can express themselves in written form. Most of us here are professionals, with a desire to learn, and a willingness to help. Since you obviously put some time and effort into your post, I am willing to do the same.

And I would like to think that if I was to approach a group of professionals (online or in real life), I would address them in complete sentences and try to make myself clear.

In a way I am agree with you but,

What I really meant to say was that there are many new people on this forum and if you write stuff that seam like you making fun of them they would not ask for help again. In a discussion forum, a written word could be harsh even though if you do not meant it like that. I am also an instructor/teacher and for some people to start writing could be a bit confusing. I think with the right input and guidance (not telling them the answer) they will find their way out of the web. Not everyone jump right on in a process like that.

That is how I understood the Q from the one who was asking for help and I am agreeing with you this was not clear at all.

Hello all,

Just want to say that I am also a master student, I have been using this forum for a while now, I have made a few spelling mistakes here and there, on a few occasions I have not explained myself in a sentence clearly. I have always been criticised about it, but I never took it personally, at the end of the day it is a mistake, if I am being corrected it is for my own good, I will remember the mistake and before I post another question or comment I will read through my post and spell check it so I do not make a mistake again. What I am saying is that criticism is a part of your life if you cannot take it constructively then life will be harder for you.

I am not a professional, I am a student like whoiam, we join these form to learn from individuals who are professionals, and in order to become professionals we must upper our standard when we talk to these people, I mean we are all mature and there is no need to talk with each other like we would be to our friends when we send them text messages. If we can keep our English up to a high level on these forums it is just good practice for the future.

Last point is that whoiam should have done some background research into the topic before asking the question.

King regards

This is a little off topic, but may be of benefit to the original poster also. )

It appears there are more than a handful of Masters Students using these forums.

Is there a group or thread where perhaps we could discuss with each other the details of our research, or other ideas relating to our research?

As i would find such a group or thread more than useful, if not interesting at least. Just today i have received the examiners report for my thesis and was happy to find my thesis has been accepted. (Wooohooo. ) ). But that aside it really would be good to see what other people in the academic field are researching (in regards to Forensics.)

Cheers

I think thats would have been a good idea. Then we will get different perspective on our research which will benefit us all!

A really good idea!

What should we call that thread here, because you ment the discussion should be here. If so I just think we should call the thread - MSc research

Hiding Data on an HDD
in surplus sectors (sectors at the end of a drive that don't make a whole cylinder)
In an HPA (drive is set to be smaller than what it actually should be)
In multiple data streams (NTFS metadata)
Meta data only files
Steganography (hiding text inside picture files)
PGP encrypted hard drive (very tough)
Changing a filename from .jpg to .exe so no one will ever know it is an image file.

Breaking in to a network.
nmap the ports
saint a good port
Analyze vulnerabilities
Pick the hack you want to use
Spoof the IP
Open a connection and take a look.

Being at a computer, committing a crime, but the computer doesn't take a video of the whole thing. So, no one can place a certain person at that computer at that time.

String a lappy in promiscuous mode to the main router and log every packet. Then you have yourself information ore. There are tools to refine the log into gold(like all credit card numbers, passwords, usernames, session rebuilds) It is amazing how often this happens simply because someone carries a clipboard and 2-way radio. This will get you in almost everywhere. It only takes a few hours to make a packet log on a busy network. When someone sees you, wave the clipboard at them. Clipboards are so hard to get that only really important people can get their hands on one.

OK, that's all the free ones. $$$$$$$$$$ if you want more. )

There are many reports on 'Cyber Crime' stats, etc. One such report is the Symantec internt security threat report published last month. By looking at the key areas raised, then perhaps one can dedeuce what technologies are needed & what the current pit falls of the existing security technologies are.

verisign & of course the CSI/FBI report is also a good background to work from.

Good luck.
