Hi,
I have received some NAS and they are powered off. But I don't have much information on the configuration and what's inside the NAS. Is it possible to preview the content inside the NAS before I consider image it or not?
Thanks in advance
Kenny
Depends on the NAS configuration .
If it's a 1-drive NAS, you could take out the drive and preview it with a write blocker.
If it's a 2-drive NAS, there is a chance it's in a RAID-1 config, so you could take out the drive and preview it with a write blocker.
If it's more than that, you could put each drive behind a write blocker and use a software to try and rebuild the RAID virtually (Mount Image Pro, RAID Reconstructor, R-Studio, EnCase (I think it does this)). This can be a bit of a puzzle.
Last resort would be to power it up and try to connect to it. Of course, you'll have to be extra careful and document of your actions, since you'll be able to modify the data.
Also, be aware that some NAS use either proprietary or unusual file systems .Â
