What do people recommend for mid size NAS storage devices?

We have been using Buffallo and Lacie 4 and 8 TB arrays in our lab and have been having a lot of problems… Have had atleast 2 out of the box not work and then another 2 or so go bad during processing…

Looking for something feasible, portable, and reliable to store images on and process off of. Intense I/O.

You are trying to process (intense i/o) and store using the same hardware, which sometimes could be a little counter productive. Separating these tasks by utilizing SSD drives (a few 256GB Crucial SSD's in RAID for example ($$$)) for processing and something not so fancy for storage may do the trick. This of course depends on you wallet and operational requirements.
