OK, being from England I'm a bit confused about the bills being passed in states across America stating that those people that perform computer forensics now need a Private Investigator license.
I realise that this is to help stop the 'cowboy' forensic investigators but does this not hinder computer forensics as a whole? This is a relatively new industry with many people having two to three years experience and no more. What are the options for these people? What maked the states believe that having licenses PI's do this kind of work will benefit the industry as a whole when many of them don't have any kind of computer-related qualification?
How about separating ourselves from the whole PI nonsense and forming a professional digital forensic body that can lobby the lawmakers to stop this 'virus' from spreading to neighboring states and countries?
They tried that in NC too. A PI who had just bought the Encase software and gotten some training was on the board and was pushing hard for the PI license.
We lobbied hard and went to every open meeting and the board went with separate licensing for DFEs. When the change goes into effect next year, for a PI to do forensics, they have to qualify for the Digital Forensics Examiner license.
Fantastic! We should really attempt something like that in e very state or the whole country. I'm only goiong on about this cos I'd like to move back to the USA 😉
Ahh yet another lobby group to contribute $ to.
Not sure why you would need to contribute money.
The lobbying done in NC was by the forensics people, not lobbyists.
