one of my netbooks is broken and I have extracted the hard drive disk. The problem is I had, stored on the broken computer, authomatic passwords of yahoo and facebook.
Could anyone explain me in easy steps(my knowledge about computing is near 0)how I could recover these stored passwords, if I plug the hard drive disk(don´t remember if OS is XP, vista or 7) via USB, to a laptop, windows 7 OS? Thanks

And those passwords were stored where/how? Directly in your browser – if so, which browser would that be? Or perhaps in some kind of password utility, such as LastPass or KeePass or 1Password?

I many (if not all) of the Nirsoft tools only work on the boot drive. So they might not be of much help with an external drive or disk image from another machine. I haven't tested all of them, so someone correct me if I am wrong.

So if you can put the netbook drive into another machine and boot from it, it should be OK. I am guessing this drive doesn't have a a standard SATA connector however?

Otherwise have a look at our OSForensics tool. It will collect passwords from the common browsers from a disk image.

If they were all in IE only, then might be a bit of a problem, as all the details are encrypted with the user's login session details. Meaning you might not get much back unless you boot the drive.

- Likewise, I haven't tested all of the tools, but at least some of them work on non-boot drives, e.g., ChromePass bears this notation in its release notes "Version 1.05 Added support for recovering Chrome passwords from external drive. (In Advanced Options)"

- If it's a netbook drive, it will have a normal SATA connector. However…

- OSForensics is an excellent suggestion, particularly given the features of the free edition.

Do I get it right? 😯
You don't remember which OS is (was) running on a laptop of yours that you used as PRIMARY and ONLY access to your yahoo and facebook accounts? ?

In addition to Jaclaz answer,

If you are the owner of facebook and yahoo you can easily retreive your passwords going through the normal process, being it sent to your alternative email, sms or whatever.

Goodluck
