Greetings,

It is one of those days, isn't it? You posted your request this morning. Three hours later you asked for suggestions and two hours after that you're getting frustrated? Even my paying clients rarely expect a response in that sort of time frame. Please, chill out.

Have you tried connecting to it with a USB write blocker? What sort of memory is in it and can you dump that memory?

If you can get an image of its file system, then you can dive in with a hex editor, strings, etc.

It may very well have a known file system on it. If so, and if you can get an image, then all your normal tools will work on it.

If you'll buy me one and send it to me, I'll figure it out for you.

Sure. D

Don't count on me, as I don't know anything about a targa sat NaV, not even what it is.

Cannot say about anyone else, though. roll

Greetings,

Ahhh. Ok, you probably should have mentioned that in your first posting. Have you tried loading it into EnCase to see if it has a recognizable filesystem? Have you tried feeding it to PhotoRec to see what it can carve out of it? Have you looked through it for any sort of file signatures, possibly for a database? Have you run strings over it to see if there is any ASCII in it that could give you a clue to other approaches? Have you called the vendor to ask if they have any technotes on it?

If you'd like to send me a copy of the image, I'll look at it for you.

You're pretty much on your own when it comes to SatNav's other than TomTom's. There are a couple of EnScripts and programs available for those but to my knowledge they won't do anything for you on anything else.

What I do for all others is to have a good root about the file system and see if I can find any plain text in any files, often there's some .dat files or similar that hold details.

Depending on what the investigation is about you could try searching for local postcodes or placenames (I've used a Grep expression before for postcodes, got lots of false hits but I think I found something useful)

If you find something tangible in a file in the file system, you can always try finding the common data pattern and keyword searching unallocated clusters for it as well.

Then it's a case of trying to work out how or why the data is there if you can.

If the device has a card that stores everything, you could clone the card and start the device up to have a look or confirm any findings.

Hope this helps

Oh, and like kovar says, chill out. Exclamation marks are like women with cats - more than two and there's a problem.
