Virtualized folder in Temporary Internet Files

I recently located Thumbcache images in a folder called Virtualized in the Temp Inet Files on a windows 7 machine. The pathway was /[root]/Users/dvb006/AppData/Local/Microsoft/Windows/Temporary Internet Files/Virtualized/C/Users/dvb006/AppData/Local/Microsoft/Windows/Explorer/thumbcache_256.db.

Does anyone why there is a thumbcache in this "virtualized" folder. Are these thumbnails from web pages viewed or are they thumbs from images saved on the computer? What is the purpose of the virtualized folder and why is it in the Temp Internet Files? Thanks for any input.
