Resorting to old school forensics here… Was each SMS message relevant for the investigation? If its for a drug matter, messages like "Hey, about that deal, you owe me xxx OK" would be relevant, but when it comes to messages like "hey bro, wake up" probably not.
I think the problem here is that some messages may not appear to be relevant to the examiner, but may be of interest to the officer in case
Initially for "manual examinations" we used a DVD Camcorder attached to a copystand with a custom bracket to hold the camera. This is a good way to capture all the data on the phone, however we found that there were problems as not all stations in the force had access to DVD playback equipment to view the discs.
It's best if you can find a way of targeting the numbers you want SMS from and getting authorisation to do just them, but sometimes you just have to get on with it and start typing - I can touch-type now… The biggest problem is when you get sickeningly sweet lovey-wovey SMS essays.
I took a forensic copy of the simcard and then deleleted the messages on it. You can store to 25 messages on a standard simcard. So i copy 25 messages from the memory (most phones have that option) to the simcard and read them out with a simcard reader. then we delete the messages from the simcard and copy the next 25….
Hi Bacchero,
