Amazon.com had it scheduled for release late June/July, but was surprised to get an email notification that it had been shipped, and received it about 36hrs later - so they clearly have it already in stock.
Well, they got it to their shipping point quickly. I found the same thing to be true with the first edition…Amazon would state on their web site (depending on where you were) that they wouldn't be shipping for another month, and the books would go out.
I hope that everyone gets and enjoys their copies of the book. I'd greatly appreciate comments, questions, and reviews on Amazon, or your own blogs. This is the second edition, and I would like to get the publisher to give me a deal for a third edition, one that covers much more Vista and Windows 7.
Thanks!
Greetings,
I got an email message from Amazon yesterday saying that my pre-ordered copy had shipped. Looking forward to getting it!

David,
Once you have a chance to read the book, any chance of getting a review on Amazon?
Thanks!
Mine is still in route from Amazon, I haven't received it yet. (
(although a Kindle version would be nice ) Yes I know it's not up to you Harlan)

As would we )
CI2019,
Well, what its going to take is input from the community. What I mean by that is this…
First, there're two things that get the publisher's attention…reviews and rankings on Amazon, and total sales. So, while I do appreciate the emails folks send me about the book, emails directly to me don't do nearly as much good as posts to blogs and reviews posted on Amazon.
Second, not a lot of folks are aware of this, but I'm the sole author of the WFA books. Both books were written on my own time and my own dime. My primary focus has been on freeware tools, and in the few cases where I've taken a look at commercial products (ProDiscover, F-Response, HBGary's Responder…), the creators of those tools have been kind enough to provide me evaluation copies, or copies for my own use. Being an individual, I don't have access to things like a full version of Windows 2008 and/or Windows 7…my capabilities include a Vista Ultimate VM and my daughter's Vista Home laptop. So, while it seems that folks *want* a lot of stuff, there's been very little in the way of any kind of support (and I'm not talking about monetary) for any of what's being asked for.
Thanks.
I just ordered the book and …. got the first edition… like a week before the release of the second. Argh!
Harlan,
What kind of support would be helpful. I have access to a lot of tools that I might be able to loan to you. Perhaps you could drop me a wish list, offline?
-David
Harlan,
I never thought about the extended purposes of reviews and rankings. I will post a review when I read the book.
In regard to the support, while I haven't looked and this is the first that I have seen of a request for support, I'll do some digging into requests you have made and see if I can accomodate anything.
Jon
Guys,
Thanks, I greatly appreciate the offers, but it's really more about the requests that come in from the community. For example, I'm a corporate responder/analyst, so I see what corporate customers have, which is still predominantly Windows XP and 2000, and some smattering of Windows 2003. However, folks from the community (LE, etc.) have been asking for things like more information on Vista and Windows 7 - most requests aren't too specific, and are therefore difficult to address, while other requests are about the Registry or specific applications.
My personal wishlist (and this isn't going out to anyone specific) is a laptop system with enough RAM to really run the Windows OSs…one for Vista, and one for Windows 7. With that, I'd also need a licensed copy of each of the OSs.
Since that's not something that is really much of a reality, I'll fall back on the same request I've made in the path with respect to RegRipper…if there's a plugin you want, send me a concise description of the issue, what you want, and a sample hive (need it for testing).
Since my book was published (yes, just last week) I've already received requests to write books on cell phone and PDA forensics, as well as on Windows game consoles and Windows-enabled devices…yet when I asked the folks requesting this information to provide devices, they went completely dark and I haven't heard a word from them. Go figure.
Anyway, again, folks…this is just the reality of the situation. My books have come out of my own time and research, most of which I've used to do my "day job" better (rather than the other way around). I'm just one guy in an office with a laptop…and can only do so much.
Thanks…
