Greetings. I'm attempting to recover several EFS files from a Windows XP SP2 laptop, using the Password Recovery Tool Kit from Accessdata. I know that I need to first decrypt the passwords in the SAM file before I can begin recovering the EFS files.

My question is this :

Does a reinstall of Windows XP SP2 to repair corrupted folder damage without reformatting the hard drive overwrite the SAM file, thus removing the passwords?

Thanks in advance for any help.

As far as I am aware no. I seem to remember that when you do the re install it keeps all your SAM data intactact and only when you format is it (obvisouly) deleted.

Don't take my complete word on that though its been a while since ive done a re install!

Hope this helps
