Atola Insight Forensic 5.8 Has Been Released. What’s New?

Atola Technology has introduced selective logical imaging of files with artifacts in a new software update for its hardware imager, Insight Forensic.

With software update 5.8, it can now extract all files with sector-level artifacts detected during physical imaging into the L01 format.

“Say, during physical drive imaging, you notice several Bitcoin and Ethereum address artifacts. You want to quickly analyze the related files without waiting hours for a full drive image. With Insight 5.8, you can pause the physical imaging session and start a quick logical imaging of all files with discovered artifacts. This dramatically shortens your time-to-evidence,” explains Vitaliy Mokosiy, CTO at Atola Technology.

Supported Artifacts

An Insight user can search for the following artifacts for subsequent extraction:

  • Bitcoin or Ethereum addresses
  • BIP39 mnemonic phrases
  • Keywords
  • Regular expressions
  • GPS coordinates
  • Phone numbers
  • Credit cards
  • Emails
  • IPs
  • MAC addresses
  • URLs

These artifacts can be detected using one of the following methods:

  • in the course of an imaging session,
  • after one or more additional runs of the Artifacts Finder module.

Logical Imaging with the New Artifacts Filter

The Imaging Results screen in Insight 5.8 now features the “Image files with artifacts” link.

It takes a user to the Logical Imaging module and applies a custom filter for the artifacts discovered during the physical imaging session.

After logical imaging is completed, Insight creates a forensically sound L01 container with only the selected files of interest, ready for immediate analysis.
