😀 Hi Everyone,

I am happy to join a discussion forum on all things related to Computing Forensics.

I have just started a degree in Secure and Forensic computing at University of Huddersfield, UK. The course is new to the University, and there is only a handful of students doing it. The course slants heavily towards Software Development.

I was wondering if anybody could point me to some good literature, books, CDs etc, for beginners. Also, if anybody else out there is doing a Degree, I would like to compare notes as to what types of subjects you may or may not be doing in the Degree.

Hi there.

Try this: -

Samms, A & Jenkinson, B (2002). Forensic Computing: A Practitioners Guide. Springer. This is a book written for the Forensic Computing Foundation MSc Degree course at RMCS Cranfield University. Professors Samms & Jenkinson run the course, and are well respected.

Many of the other books you may get recommended slant towards the INFOSEC area of Forensic Computing, such as hacking and intrusion detection and not really FC in its pure sense.

You are probably best saving your money and doing research online. Try this page for some free tutorials and info:

Also by frequenting bbs such as this, (which IMHO has lots of potential) may/will increase your knowledge and assist with any projects or research you need to accomplish as part of your studies.

Another good bbs is at: www.digital-detective.co.uk

Wow!!

Thanks - I have ordered the Sammes and Jenkinson book from Amazon.

I would agree that this discussion board has great potential. The University actively encourages us to use Discussion Boards to gather and research information for Assignments (as long as they are correctly referenced).

The link you provided has plenty of info for me to delve into.

Thanks Again!

Juniper,

Welcome to Forensic Focus. Some of the books which I'm happy to recommend are listed here:

I fully agree with Andy's recommendation of the Samms & Jenkinson book…it's a very much underrated work and deserves to be on every investigator's bookshelf IMHO.

How are you enjoying life in Huddersfield? I used to live fairly nearby while doing my first degree at Leeds Uni.

Jamie
