In speaking to people on the law enforcement side and those on the side of industry, it seems that you need some experience in various areas to break into forensics. I have a BS in Computing and Security Technology, which required I take a theory based course in computer forensics. I also have a couple of computer related certifications (Certified Ethical Hacker, Security+, Mobile Phone Seizure Certification, and CCENT). In my research it seems that a background in law would help to perhaps jump start me in the direction I would like to go.

Thus, I have been considering joining the military (the Army National Guard) to get some of the experience that I lack. Also, it can provide the funds to further my education and I get to serve my country at the same time. But my question is what MOS would help to best get into computer forensics/investigations? I was looking at either 31B (Military Police) or 35M (Human Intelligence Collector). Obviously, Military Police would give me some of the legal background and I thought Human Intelligence Collector would give me the interviewing skills. Anyone use the military as a stepping stone into forensics? If so, what MOS did you choose? Thanks!

Grinch,
It's been twenty years since I got out of the Army so I won't be of much help, but I will suggest that in addition to seeking information in the forum you seek out opportunities in the Army Reserve, Navy and Air Force. I know recruiters can be somewhat overbearing in their attempts to make a quota, but go and talk to them as well.

Most classes I see, If they are available to LE, want full time officers, but you might check with a local LE agency and see if becoming a reserve officer could get you access to training opportunities.

Best of luck,

I got into forensics with a military background, but it was over 8 years ago and things have changed a lot since then. If you are going to try the Military as a route into forensics then you are going to need to give it a few years before you get a chance at it. You could try Air Force Office of Investigations, but you would need to be an E-5 or an O-3 before they would let you. Going in as an MP in any of the forces would also give you a chance, but again it would take time.
