Considering making the pitch to agency leadership to purchase the Atola Insight device.  I would like to be prepared to address the "price shock" that likely to be encountered when the request is made.  Any government users with advice or examples of how the purchase was justified?

I am a one-man shop and am looking for a powerful device that can be used in the lab or in the field to deal with imaging.  Subject matter investigated in white-collar crime.

Lab capabilities are minimal at this time.

@mokosiy

Thank you for the response.

I will need to make a strong case as to why my agency should purchase the Atola Insight.  I must be able to justify the cost versus other less expensive options of cobbling together other tools to achieve what is available in a single device such as the Atola Insight.

Can you provide some pointers?

Do you have any government agency clients in Texas that have the Atola Insight?

I will reach out via email.

I'd personally avoid things like the Atola products (not singling them out, other brands have the same issues), you'd be better off with a number of cheap small pcs, a live disc or installation of a forensics linux distro (such as https://tsurugi-linux.org/) and a NAS to image to.

Cheaper and generally quicker as well. Deepspar is a pretty good one if you do need damaged disk capability as well.

To be fair, I cannot agree with the "generally quicker" point. We have about 20 engineers who continue to squeeze time-saving performance out of imaging and other long-running tasks for DFIR customers. Moreover, all our systems are tested on 600 drives.

A forensic hardware imager has to be optimized for high performance and (at least) good UX. Otherwise, we would fail in this business 🙂 Think of it like using a PlayStation or Xbox for gaming, where the equipment is specialized and optimized for that specific function, ensuring that users get the best experience possible.
