Relevance of holding assets in legal holds with ediscovery

I want to inquire about a topic I have not found a good discussion on. I have counsel insistent on ensuring that all computer assets are also held for those on legal hold. However, this has become problematic due to the sheer size of stored assets. While I know an organization can be sanctioned to provide assets when a failure to preserve documents for ESI is discovered, does this apply to that case or all cases in the future?
