Samsung Instinct - USB settings help

Post Posted: Thu Feb 12, 2009 5:41 pm

I have Device Seizure and trying to obtain a logical collection of the device for a SAMSUNG Instinct (SMH-800, i think).

My machine only sees the storage area of the phone, so DS cannot see the phone. I'm trying to find a setting on the phone to tell the data port to not treat the phone like a storage device and connect as if I were to sync with the phone.

The manual doesn't have much detail. Any one know what I need to do to accomplish this?

Thanks,

Jason
I don't know this model and don't use device seizure. I'll try and help but just to check first, did you read the User Guide for this Samsung model?

It (the User Guide) constantly refers the reader for the need to have certain drivers that are available on a CD ROM that comes with the product.

This is actually a local setting on the phone that has to be modified in order to image the data. However, its a touch-screen phone and the menu settings do not have any visible data/USB options (Other Samsung smart-phones do this).

Without this, I am unable to connect and image.

OK, well I have been through the User Guide and as you mention there is no icon for USB local setting. The User Guide I am looking at says :

PAGE 61
Before using your device’s mass storage capabilities, you must first install the USB driver to your computer from the CD-ROM that came with your device.
1. Connect one end of the included USB
cable to an available USB port on your
computer.
2. Plug the other end of the included USB
cable into your Accessories/Power
Cable Jack located on the side of the
device. (Wait for the connection to be
completed. When connected, your
computer will automatically detect your
device.)
3. Click the My Computer icon on the
Windows desktop, and double-click
the newly created drive letter (which
may appear as an icon or text, depending on your View settings).
The default folders that appear are:
● DCIM is the default location for pictures and videos taken by the device.
● Media is the default location for both downloaded content and sideloaded videos.
● Music is the default storage location for downloaded and sideloaded music files
managed by the Sprint Media Manager. This location can also contain playlists.
● Others provides a separate storage area for data files and other miscellaneous
information.
4. Double-click any folder to reveal the contents of the microSD card.

--------------
Transferring Data Directly to the microSD
The microSD card can be accessed and used just as easily as any other communicating
storage device.
1. From your Desktop, double-click My Computer > <Device Letter> entry to display the folders
and files available on the internal microSD card.
2. Open a folder and begin the transfer process of files from your computer to the microSD
card’s target folder.
To remove the connection:
When you have finished transferring data, click the USB device icon on your computer’s
taskbar, and follow the onscreen instructions to safely unplug the USB cable.
Creating Folders in the microSD Card
1. From your Desktop, double-click My Computer > <Device Letter>.
2. Right-click and select New > Folder.

Important Connection Information
The USB drivers (available on the CD-ROM) must be installed before connecting the Instinct to your computer. Failure to install these drivers can cause your Instinct to not function with your computer.
To avoid loss of data, DO NOT remove the USB cable, the microSD card, or the battery while files are being accessed or transferred.
DO NOT use your computer to change or edit folder or file names on the microSD, and do not attempt to transfer large amounts of data from the computer to the microSD card. Doing so may cause the microSD card to fail.
DO NOT turn off or restart your computer, or return to the unlock screen, while using a mass storage device. Doing so will result in loss or damage of data.
While your device is connected to the computer, your device’s screen will display “Phone
Off.” You cannot make or receive calls while your device is using an active USB connection.
If you connect a mass storage device to a peripheral device, your device may not work properly.

I have seen comments from an examiner that refer to this device as SPH-M800 (if this is one and the same as you refer Jason) that he indicates that BITPIM has successfully recovered data from this model. I did not find device seizure as listed to recover data from this model.

Just a little update on the M800 phone. Been in contact w/ Paraben's Device Seizure support. If you don't have their latest diver pack, you'll need it. That allows me to see the phone with the proper drivers & port options on my forensic machine, however, there is still some communication issue w/ DS & the phone. Paraben informs me they are working on a DLL that should address the problem.

If you need to get something off the phone sooner that Paraben can write that DLL, then you can try to use BitPim to logically grab the file system off of the phone.

Use the "Other CDMA" phone setting, back up the file system as a zip file, and enter the zip file as an evidence item into FTK Imager. you can then look around and usually find what you need that way, you'll just have to parse it out as there is no report function with bitpim.

Hope this helps.
